3 . 3 . 8 . 2 S a f e t y . The safety shall be capable of being manually
m o v e d from one position to the other $ and shall remain in the position
s e t until reset manually. T h e safety shall block the trigger and lock
the hamner in a position out of contact with the trigger when the hammer
i s cocked and the safety is moved to the safe (rearward) position; and
w h e n the safety is moved to the "fire" (forward) position, the hammer
s h a l l release when the trigger is pulled.
3 . 3 . 8 . 3 S e a r . W h e n the trigger is retained rearward and the
hammer is retrracted the sear shall engage and hold the hammer until
t h e trigger is released and allowed to move forward.
3 . 3 . 8 . 4 T r i g g e r . The trigger hooks shall hold the hammer in the
c o c k e d p o s i t i o n t h e t r i g g e r i s p u l l e d , A f t e r partial or completed
t r i g g e r pull the trigger shall return to its normal forward position under
spring action.
3 . 3 . 8 . 5 T r i g g e r g u a r d . T h e trigger guard shall be capable of
being latched to and unlatched from the housing, When unlatched and
r o t a t e d the trigger guard shall be capable of cocking the hammer.
3 . 3 . 9 Gas cylinder group. T h e gas cylinder shall be securely
r e t a i n e d on the barrel by the gas cylinder lock and plug. `The gas
p i s t o n shall move of its own weight in either direction through its full
r a n g e of travel in the gas cylinder with the rifle axis vertical. The
g a s cylinder plug shall be assembled with the torque specified on the
a p p l i c a b l e drawing. T h e gas cutoff valve shall rotate from one position
to the other only when manually pressed inward and rotated, and when
i n d e x e d and released shall return to the outward Position by spring
action.
3 . 3 . 1 0 H a n d g u a r d a s s e m b l y . The handguard shall be securely re-
tained on the barrel by the rear handguard band and the front band.
3 . 3 . 1 1 Magazine assembly and magazine latch. The magazine follower
s h a l l f u n c t i o n t h r o u g h i t s f u l l r a n g e of travel under spring action with-
o u t b i n d i n g . When the last cartridge from the magazine has been fired }
the follower shall position the bolt stop to hold the bolt open. The
m a g a z i n e shall assemble to the rifle without manual depression of the
m a g a z i n e latch and shall be retained in the magazine-well of the receiver
by the magazine latch and the operating rod spring guide. When the
magazine latch is pressed forward, it shall permit maunual removal of'
t h e magazine from the rifle.
3 . 3 . 1 2 Operating rod guide. The operating rod guide shall be
s e c u r e l y retained on the barrel by the spring pin.
3 . 3 . 1 3 Operating rod spring and spring guide, With the magazine
a s s e m b l e d to the receivers the operating rod spring shall seat on the
o p e r a t i n g rod spring guide and not on the receiver.
